I became interested in bee keeping when I knew that a friend who is a photographer in Sunstar News Paper was keeping bees, we went to his place and check his hives, and have a dose of bee sting by injecting it to us so we would know if we are allergic or not and we have already searched that a bee sting can cure arthritis. He started to keep bees when he met a couple from Lapu-Lapu City, they are making an article about bee keeping. I started communicating with Clarita Vergara a 53 year old bee keeper and she introduced us to their bee technician Stephen Bastida, 38, who got started in beekeeping in 1994, , they conduct a 4 week seminar for us, and a hands on checking of bees on what to do in handling bees. The bees that we are keeping is a western honey bee or European honey bee (Apis mellifera), European honey bees are variable in color, but are some shade of black or brown intermixed with yellow. The bee ranges from 3/8 to 3/4 of an inch long, with workers being the smallest and the queen being the largest. A queen bee is elongate and has a straight stinger with no barbs. A worker bee has hind legs specialized for collecting pollen - each leg is flattened and covered with long fringed hairs that form a pollen basket. A worker bee's stinger has barbs. A drone bee is stout-bodied and has large eyes. We started to have 6 colonies in our vacant lot, and I'm checking it every 7days.
